Title: "A Overview of The Philippines Islands"
About: Travel and Tourism Philippines

Break out the sunscreen and pack your hats as we head on down to the Philippines!

Found in South East Asia, the Philippine archipelago is composed of 7,107 islands all offering its own brand of entertainment and down home friendliness that has earned the Filipinos recognition for their hospitality.

Pristine beaches, a diverse culture and history, abundant flora and fauna and the biggest variety of marine life that is sure to thrill nature and cultural enthusiasts abound in the country.

For the modern tourist, Manila, the Philippine capital, and the cities of Makati and Quezon City have a wide offering of huge malls and night life entertainment.

These are just a few things that make the Philippines a draw for most vacationers in Asia.

The Pinoys and their Culture

Filipinos, or "Pinoy" in the vernacular, are descended from a predominantly Malay origin mixed with Chinese, Spanish, American and Arab blood. The dominant religions are Catholicism with more than 83% of the population as members, Muslims with 8%, followed by Protestants, Buddhists, and other religions.

Some tribal communities still retain animistic and pagan practices honoring the "anito" or nature spirits.

Close family ties and religious piousness are two strong characteristics of Filipinos. The spirit of kinship or "Bayanihan" as it is called is strongly practiced among the communities.

Respect for elders is mostly demonstrated through "pagmamano" or the act of touching one’s forehead to the elder’s hand. It is also common for Filipino children to call all persons older than they are "Tita" (aunt) or "Tito" (uncle) or "Ate" (ah-teh) which means "elder sister" or "kuya" (kuh-yah) or "elder brother."

It is also usual among young people to use the honorific "po" in their sentences whenever they are talking with their elders.

Visitors are often surprised when they are greeted with the words "Kain tayo!" ("Let’s eat") on coming upon a group of Filipinos eating, never mind if they have never met before.

Tourists in the country need not worry about language difficulties for Filipinos are one of the most proficient in English in Asia. English is an official language in addition to the national language Pilipino, which is based on the Tagalog dialect.

With three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, Filipinos are divided into geographical and cultural regions each with their own traits and provincial dialects. Most foreigners are often surprised to find that there are 111 dialects existing and actively used in the Philippines.
