Philippine Islands Overview Title: "A Overview of The Philippines
Islands" Continued From Page 1 The Philippines has all sorts of travel itineraries for different touring interests. There are cultural heritage sites like the famed Banaue Rice Terraces in the Mountain Province or natural wonders like the Mayon Volcano in Bicol. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the safari in Calauit while marine life buffs will appreciate the perfect diving waters in Palawan. Bird watchers in turn could visit a reserve in Davao where species of birds like the Philippine Eagle are protected. Those into water sports could go surfing in Siargao where the waves are totally righteous for that adrenaline rush. For those who would opt to take in the rich culture and history of the
Philippines, there are a whole lot of cultural, historical or religious sites that could
be visited. Getting There The major international airport is the Ninoy Aquino International
Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Most international flights arrive here but international flights
also do arrive at airports in Cebu, Davao, Laoag and Subic. Moving Around the Archipelago Aside from cars and taxis, jeepneys, buses, tricycles and bicycles with sidecars are the common mode of transport within the city areas. Most tourist destinations and islands may be reached either by air or by sea from the Luzon mainland where Manila is located. Island hopping can either be done through chartered planes or by ferries. While the big shipping companies have modern ferry vessels servicing most major ports, dont be surprised to find that some smaller islands just use wooden boats with bamboo outriggers for ferries. Accommodations Most major cities have accommodations that cater both to the top-budget holiday maker and the frugal backpacker. Hotels and inns may be found in most big cities with prices ranging
from P1,500 (roughly $25) to P5,000 (about $100) per night. Youth hostels, lodging houses,
and motels also offer accommodations for less than $20 per night. The local currency used in the Philippines is the Philippine Peso. Foreign currency may be exchanged at most banks, big department stores, and Central Bank sanctioned moneychangers. Most establishments also accept credit cards like MasterCard, Visa and American Express. Visitors are however advised to carry small amounts of money for contingencies. Tourists are also advised to have flu, dengue, and malaria shots prior to arrival in the country as a safeguard against diseases that thrive in the moist, warm climate of the Philippines. Due to the temperate climate, lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes or sandals are suitable for going around to see the sights. Visitors are however reminded that while most parts of the country have been exposed to Western influences, there are still some areas where natives would be shocked at less than conservative clothing. Discretion is recommended. All the regions have their own tourism offices available to assist visitors in the area. Suggestions for itineraries and arrangements for travel or tourist guides may also be coursed through them.
